"Childish single handedly resurrects the tradition of homage and counteracts the current practice of devaluing the past through irony."

- Charles Thomson

Wild Billy Childish was born in Chatham, Kent, in 1959. He studied painting at St Martins School of Art, from where he was expelled in 1981. Childish has published 30 collections of his poetry, recorded over 80 albums and produced over 2,000 paintings. He was the co-founder of the anti-conceptualist group The Stuckists, which is 'against conceptualism, hedonism and the cult of the ego-artist', but split from them soon after, citing serious "artistic differences".

According to Childish, true art is to be found in the "depth of personal expression rather than in the drive for fame and press cuttings". "We're anti -cool and plan to remain nobodies" says the eccentric yet highly prolific musician, writer, artist phenomenon, Billy Childish of his current musical guise, The Buff Medways or to call them by their full name; "Wild Billy Childish and the Friends of the Buff Medway Fanciers Association".

Labelling himself as a 'Remodernist', Childish states that his style is a 'perfect antidote to spiritual bankruptcy of post-modernism'.

Projects include The Resignation of Sir Nicholas Serota, (1999) I'd rather you liead, selected poetry, woodcuts and drawings 1980-98,. Handing the Loaded Pistol to the Enemy - a homage to Vincent van Gogh at London's Aquarium Gallery, Sex Crimes of the Futcher at Simon Finch Art - Now ON!
